Worth noting that a lot of DC MCBs have magnetic arc suppression where a magnet directs the arc into the suppression chamber. These breakers have + and - indicated on the terminals and the polarity should match the source of fault current.

We just went through a power outage during a heat emergency where I live. It understandably has us asking a lot of questions about the best way to shore up our lives with generation when the grid goes down. One of my big questions was what the efficiency curve looks like for generators, and this helped a lot! It sounds like my best bet is to invest in some battery infrastructure so I can run our little generator at full hooch at all times, while I actively manage the storage. Thank you!

Smart alternators are the stupidest idea. More failure prone & complex to save a miniscule amount of fuel. That savings will never cover the increased repair costs. Another reason politicians and other "do gooder" fools need to keep their hands of things they Do NOT understand. Thanks OBUMA!

  • @ummati4826

the current coming from the dynamo is a pulsating DC current. This pulsating DC current is changed to AC current by an inverter Circuit board. such generator uses permanent magnet dynamo to produce high voltage and current at low speeds. that's why these generators are much quieter, because less power is needed to run the dynamo.

OK, I get the dual battery system idea... But WHAT if I wish to use 2 alternators for each system (start battery and an aux. deep cycle battery)? That seems to me the best idea as then I won't have to worry at all about killing off any of of other devices I wish to use. How then is the best and proper way to set all this up? I no longer have the old Air Con in my van as it died and I really did not want to use it anyway seeing as I plan to mostly be off-road most of the time at slower speeds. I know it "CAN" be done but frankly I just need to learn just how set it up. I wanted to ONLY use the Starter Batter for 2 things: Start the car and use the Head Lamps... PERIOD. I wanted to use EVERYTHING ELSE for the radio/Amp set up, Short Wave Radio, the Off-Road Lights on top of the Van etc.. If I can just get one CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE set of instructions I'll be off to the races as they say. PLEASE HELP!!! :)

Thanks for the concise information! Im making a decision to live in my SUV in southern California, a few hours north of Los Angeles. I absolutely need an alternative power-bank and the proper means to charge it. Versatility and adaptability will likely serve me best, but cost is what will hold me back. And this “project” is not something I have been able to prepare for- it sounds better that I made a choice instead of not having any other reasonable options for permanent living space, like a bedroom in a house. It’s so expensive, and I’m on fixed income and I can’t stand the idea of living check to check and becoming whatever that makes someone turn into. Summer is here, in the high desert, and temps are regularly 100 to 110 de degrees Fahrenheit. I must get a power system in my vehicle with an external (ideally 12V DC powered) air conditioner of some type. Im a military veteran so I understand that diesel vehicles are designed for continuous operation. Ive always heard that unleaded gasoline vehicles “don’t like” running for hours on end without actually driving/traveling. And gas would be very costly to do that. I hope i dont melt in the desert before i can put something really good and reliable together. I hope that this period will only last 2-5 years maximum. So whatever I get, i need it to last me 5 years to be safe. Im totally open to input and suggestions to consider before i start to purchase any of this equipment. Thanks

Good luck! Jesse

Thanks for all of the info? It sounds like the 3rd option is what I would do. However, I have heard of people having a second alternator. If/when that is the case would each alternator simply charge their own system (starter battery or deep cycle/home batteries)? If/when that is the case, would I need these other components? Or perhaps just one on the house cycle to make sure it gets the correct voltage and flow?

So what if you mount bi-facial panels on a tin roof, say 12"from the roof. Then use the reflective paint on the roof. The same stuff used on the highway to make white lines! Shouldn't this reflect nearly 90% of the light? Possibly close to 98%much more than a traditional roof anyway, i think the paint is traditional paint, thr reflective part come from basically powdered glass applied over the paint, so on a roof, a white or silver roof sealer can be used then use the reflective powder. This should make a noticable difference in the temperature under the roof also. Depending on what it started with for roofing.. my house, half the roof is south facing, so I'm putting panels on the roof and the south wall, as well as on the fence, im going anout 12' tall and 30'+/- long in two places with panels starting about 16" from the ground. Hoping to get about 30kw of solar all together and use excess solarpower to lift heavy weights into a few tall trees. To generate power on the way back down, getting a 2-3klbs weight 25-30 feet up a tree on a guide cable. That will return to earth at a rate of 12" per minute roughly 7"-15" per minute, with a fence around the danger area, in the event of no power, they can be hand cranked up taking about a hour to two hours each, using a hand crank winch, power can be returned as soon as the weight is to the top. Having 4-6 of these if they generate 4,kwh each. Take 30-40 minutes to return to earth, this is 2kwh, each. Maybe more weight can be added, maybe use two weights per tree with a single generator, a 100:1 overdrive coupled to an additional overdrive. Connected to a 3phase pmg , converting 2 rpm to possibly 2000, the weight dropping 6"-7", minimum for up to 40', then raise the weight to 6000 lbs, and slow the decent to 7"-8" max per minute, the output should be 6kw+ for 55-90minutes producing roughly 10 kwh per tree, as far as financial viable, around 1.5-3 kwh is likely, and can be manually reset in 30 minutes. Getting 1500 watts for a hourwould be awesome. I don't think the math works out. But i hope to get something going possibly using a Nissan leaf motor as a generator, or something similar. Maybe a scratch made generator. Using large n52 magnets!

Very interesting ideas James, thanks for sharing! I agree with the general idea of using bifacial's and creating highly reflective roofing surface. I also like the idea of storing your excess electrical energy in potential energy [ie.e. weights in trees]. Which benefits do you recon the latter has over storing your excess electrical energy in batteries?

Whoever is watching in 2024, there are now 100AH 12V lithium batteries selling for as low as $300, which would put the cost at closer to $0.08/kWh. In addition, what is also important to remember is that the battery (LiFePO4) doesn't become "dead" after 4000 cycles. The cycle count is to indicate how many cycles before the battery degrades to 80% capacity. So the true cost of kWh is actually even lower.

It is good to hear from you Michael, thank you for your message. It brings me great joy to hear that you are now installing your own system, well done! Would you mind sharing what kind of system you are installing? I am quite curious, and it might serve as inspiration for others as well. Thanks, good luck and enjoy your system installation! Jesse
